Founded in 1995 by cellist Wilhelmina Smith to champion new music along with the standard classical chamber repertoire, Salt Bay Chamberfest cuts across a large swath of musical styles from the Renaissance to the present day and regularly features the music of living composers. The two-week festival each August in Damariscotta, Maine, has a unifying theme such as Darkness & Light, Game of Pairs, or Troubadours & Tangos. Musicians who are insightful, committed performers--including regulars such as the Brentano String Quartet, violinist Jennifer Koh, and pianist Ignat Solzhenitsyn--return each year together with new faces chosen for their special knowledge of the contemporary and classical repertoire.
