Mary Rowell Says Adieu to ETHEL: In a May 31 email message, violinist Mary Rowell announced her decision to leave the rock band/string quartet ETHEL, after 13 years.   She will be succeeded by new music specialist Jennifer Choi.

Nicole Mitchell Receives Alpert Award: Jazz flutist/composer Nicole Mitchell is one of five artists receiving a 2011 Alpert Awards in the Arts. Administered by California Institute of the Arts, the annual awards provide five unrestricted prizes of $75,000 each.

Yvonne Lam is Eighth Blackbird’s New Violinist: The sextet eighth blackbird has announced the appointment of violinist Yvonne Lam. Lam, the current assistant concertmaster of the Washington National Opera Orchestra, will succeed Matt Albert.

John Gilbreath Named a 2011 JJA Jazz Hero The Jazz Journalists Association has named CMA member John Gilbreath, executive director of Earshot Jazz in Seattle, WA as one of its 2011 Jazz Heroes-"activists, advocates, altruists, aiders and abettors of jazz" who have had significant impact in their local area.

Ensemble Dal Niente names new E.D.: Saxophonist Ryan Muncy has been appointed executive director of the Chicago-based new-music group Ensemble Dal Niente. A candidate for the Doctor of Music degree in saxophone performance at Northwestern University, Muncy succeeds founding composer Kirsten Broberg.

The E/O has been invited to return to Addis Ababa to be the centerpiece of a tribute to Ethiopia's maestro of the 1930's-70's, Nerses Nalbandian. Mr. Nalbandian was THE Maestro of Ethiopia from the 1930s to the 1970s. To help fund the May 2011 trip, we have created a Kickstarter.com "crowdfunding" site.
