Matt Bauder formed Day in Pictures in 2007. The title was inspired by a BBC News web link of the same name. On this site, pictures from around the world are posted, hinting at the state of the world on that particular day. Browsing through the website, each image presents an unpredictable subject and locale. The format frames these disparate photographs into a continuum of a singular logic. Day in Pictures the quintet functions in the same way. Compositions with strikingly different stylistic elements fit into the same set of music through the framing of the traditional instrumentation. The group's first recording was released in 2010 on Clean Feed and received 4 1/2 stars from Downbeat and Jazz Album of the year by Magnet Magazine.
