Pianist/composer Helen Sung shares the story of her CMA New Jazz Works project "Sung With Words", a music-inspiring-poetry-inspiring-music collaboration with renowned American poet Dana Gioia.

From Houston, TX, pianist/composer Helen Sung was an aspiring classical pianist before Jazz intervened during her university studies at UT Austin. She went on to graduate from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance (at NEC), win the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition, and work with such luminaries as the late Clark Terry, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Terri Lyne Carrington, Regina Carter, Wynton Marsalis, & the Mingus Big Band. Her album "Anthem For A New Day" topped jazz radio charts and garnered a SESAC award. Sung also serves on the jazz faculties of Juilliard & Columbia University. A commissioned composer, she has received several grants, including a 2014 CMA/Doris Duke Foundation New Jazz Works Grant.
