Geof Bradfield’s work as a composer synthesizes jazz and African/Diaspora influences with formal practices from the Western European tradition. His 2011 CMA commission Melba!, informed by extensive research into Melba Liston's archived scores, narrates the struggles and achievements of this often overlooked artist. The work received national attention on NPR’s The Jazz Set and has been performed throughout the U.S. His recent release Our Roots (4*,DownBeat) re-imagines works by Blind Willie Johnson, the Georgia Sea Island Singers, and Lead Belly. Bradfield was named a rising star arranger and tenor saxophonist in the 2016 DB Critics Poll and is currently working on a 2016 CMA New Jazz Works commission for nonet for premier in fall 2017.

I am thrilled and honored to be selected as one of the 2016 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grantees, and am grateful to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation for their generous and long standing support of this program. The Geof Bradfield Ensemble and guests will premier the new work for nonet in fall 2017.
