Present Music will be joined by Chicago’s superb contemporary music ensemble, Third Coast Percussion, for a special performance featuring Daniel Variations by Steve Reich. Reich intended this piece to stand as a "shimmering piece of music and an enduring work” to honor journalist, Daniel Pearl, and his work to connect people in dangerous corners of the world.
Third Coast Percussion will also perform Resounding Earth by Augusta Read Thomas, which features four percussionists playing 300 bells from a wide variety of cultures and historical periods. The piece is conceived as a cultural statement celebrating interdependence and commonality across all cultures; and as a musical statement celebrating the extraordinary beauty and diversity of expression inherent in bell sounds.
Described as "hard-grooving" musicians by the NYTimes, Third Coast Percussion is known for ground-breaking collaborations across a wide range of disciplines.
The Present Music Ensemble will join Third Coast Percussion for Timothy Andres' Trade Winds, a piece for bass clarinet, percussion, piano and string quartet. Trade Winds is a chaccone surrounded by two bookends: a big, busy introduction and a short, hesitant coda. The meat of the piece is the exchange of long, vocal lines passed back and forth between the instruments over repeating harmonies, leading to the obligatory ground-shifting moment.
