New York City-based Mivos Quartet presents the second annual Mivos/Kanter String Quartet Composition Prize Concert at A.R.T./New York – South Oxford Space in Brooklyn, featuring 2012 prizewinner Chris Fisher-Lochhead and his composition, Dig, Absolutely. The Mivos/Kanter Prize was established in 2011 to support the work of emerging and mid-career composers and to encourage continued interest in new compositions for string quartet. The program will also include David Brynjar Franzson’s gorgeous noise-meditation on repetition and reappearances (recently recorded by Mivos for their forthcoming album release), along with works by David Grant and Carl Kanter. The evening will also feature British composer Thomas Adés’s Arcadiana, a modern staple of the quartet repertoire which Mivos workshopped intensively during a residency at the Aldeburgh Festival (UK) in January 2013. This concert presented in celebration of National Chamber Music Month, a nationwide initiative by Chamber Music America to draw attention to small ensemble performance.
Chris Fisher-Lochhead: Dig, Absolutely (2010)
David Brynjar Franzson: on repetition and reappearances (2010-11) David Grant: String Quartet
Carl Kanter: Songs for String Quartet
Thomas Adés: Arcadiana (1994)
ABOUT THE KANTER/MIVOS PRIZE
The Mivos/Kanter String Quartet Composition Prize was established in 2011 to support the work of emerging and mid- career composers and to encourage continued interest in new compositions for string quartet. The winning composer, selected from over one hundred applicants, receives a performance of their work in New York City on the Mivos Quartet concert season and a cash prize.
Mivos aims to cultivate further collaborations with the winning composers beyond the official concert. The 2011 prizewinner, Felipe Lara, has become a great colleague of the Mivos Quartet. His work has been performed on numerous Mivos concerts in the U.S. and abroad, and will be featured on Mivos’ forthcoming solo album release (Spring 2013, release details pending).
The Mivos/Kanter Prize is made possible through the generous contributions of Carl Kanter.
