The extreme emotional terrain of the Passion story has long inspired composers and continues to do so today. The “brilliant” vocal ensemble Ekmeles (New Yorker) leads a program of classics by Schütz and Haydn (from the “deeply moving” Attacca Quartet, New York Times) interwoven with two strikingly different contemporary accounts – the New York premiere of German master Wolfgang Rihm’s 7 Passion Texts and David Lang’s unforgettable Pulitzer Prize-winning little match girl passion, based on the story by Hans Christian Anderson.
Schütz – Excerpts, Seven Last Words of Christ and St. Matthew Passion
Haydn – Excerpts, Seven Last Words of Christ (version for string quartet)
Wolfgang Rihm – Seven Passion Texts (New York premiere)
David Lang - little match girl passion
