Based on religious texts, Caleb Burhans’ Evensong features performances by the 20-member Alarm Will Sound ensemble and the Trinity Wall Street Choir. As a pure, dynamic expression of the struggle between sacred and secular, the recording presents motifs and themes from the Christian church service, refracted through the modern lens of new music and the avant garde.
III. Excelsior, A New Music USA Commision*: A dramatic concert work for mixed ensemble and soprano. In an exploration of opera in the modern vernacular, Fifth House Ensemble (5HE) commissions and performs Excelsior, a new chamber concert work scored for large mixed ensemble and soprano composed by Caleb Burhans. The work depicts Captain Joe Kittinger's 4'36'' free fall from just over 102,000 feet as part of Project Excelsior. Designed to test the limits of the human body as well as new technology, this jump from 1960 remains the world record. Burhans expands this 4-minute episode into a 30-minute dramatic experience uniting storytelling, text, music and vivid imagery.
*Excelsior was commissioned through New Music USA’s Commissioning Music/USA program, which is made possible by generous support form the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Helen F. Whitaker Fund.
