Emmanuel Music presents the Boston premiere of Handel’s oratorio Susanna. This late work, composed two years before Handel’s death, tells the story of Susanna and the Elders, a tale of faith, virtue, and justice. This allegory of the chaste matron, the corrupt judges, and the boy prophet Daniel who exposes their hypocrisy, symbolizes God’s protection of his faithful in adversity. Handel’s orchestral writing teems with natural phenomena: birds, beasts, breezes, floods, and of course, the rich inner world of its virtuous steadfast heroine.
