Kodaly's research of Hungarian folk music left an indelible mark on his compositions, and his lovely Serenade is no exception. The program opens with Beethoven's dramatic and intense C minor Trio, and closes with Dvorak's cinematic "American" Quintet, full of wonderful melodies, open and awake to possibilities much like the country in which he found himself.
Beethoven Trio in C minor for Violin, Viola, and Cello, Op. 9, No. 3 (1797-98)
Kodaly Serenade for Two Violins and Viola, Op. 12 (1919-20)
Dvorak Quintet in E-flat major for Two Violins, Two Violas, and Cello, Op. 97 "American" (1893)
