Description

In keeping with the River City Jazz Masters' Latin Jazz tradition, Arturo Sandoval, one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, will be making his first appearance in Baton Rouge. He has received 10 Grammy Awards, with 19 nominations, 6 Billboard awards and an Emmy Award. Born in a small town in Havana, Cuba, Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, and while still in Cuba, was influenced by jazz musicians Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie, finally meeting Gillespie later in 1977. Gillespie became a mentor and colleague, playing with Sandoval in concerts in Europe and Cuba and later featuring him in the United Nations Orchestra. Dansoval defected while touring with Gillespie in 1990, and he became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1998.

In 2013, Arturo Sandoval received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

***Please note that the River City Jazz Masters Series' Arturo Sandoval show is being POSTPONED from its original date (January 17, 2018) due to weather conditions which have delayed the arrival of some of the performers and which will potentially put our valued audience members at risk. The show will now take place on FRIDAY, January 19, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Manship Theatre. Thank you to Manship Theatre at Shaw Center for the Arts for accommodating this change! Attached is an official press release relaying this information. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions.

The performance of Arturo Sandoval Sextet, presented in collaboration with Banner Series @ McNeese State University and Acadiana Center for the Arts, is supported by Presenter Consortium for Jazz, a program of Chamber Music America funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
