NOVA is collaborating with other arts organizations in Salt Lake City in a week-long festival devoted to the music of the extraordinary American composer Michael Hersch. Hailed as “a natural musical genius who continues to surpass himself” (Washington Post), Mr. Hersch will be in Utah to oversee production of his chamber opera and to serve as the Maurice Abravanel Distinguished Visiting Composer at the University of Utah School of Music, where he will present lectures and teach composition students. Events are presented in partnership with Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation and Utah Opera.

Events are held at 7:30 PM in Libby Gardner Hall at the University of Utah School of Music.

January 29 (Monday), 2018: This concert features Michael Hersch’s stunning 2.5-hour cycle for solo piano, The Vanishing Pavilions. This program will be performed by NOVA Artistic Director Jason Hardink, presented in partnership with the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation.

January 30 (Tuesday), 2018: The festival continues with another major work by Mr. Hersch, Last Autumn. Scored for horn and cello, this modern masterpiece features Utah Symphony Acting Principal Horn Edmund Rollett and cellist Noriko Kishi.

February 1, 2018  (Thursday): NOVA presents Michael Hersch’s recent chamber opera, On the Threshold of Winter. This performance features soprano Ah Young Hong (Peabody Conservatory), conductor Tito Muñoz (Phoenix Symphony, Music Director), and an outstanding ensemble of Utah musicians.
